Number of the week 11 The number of women of color who starred in the top 100-grossing films Despite having top billing in hit films like "Encanto" and "Eternals," just 11 women of color starred in the top 100 grossing films last year, according to research from the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at the University of Southern California. Those women included Gemma Chan in "Eternals," Stephanie Beatriz in "Encanto" and Kelly Marie Tran in "Raya and the Last Dragon." In 2020, nine movies had a woman of color in a starring role. "While Hollywood has maintained a focus on girls/women and communities of color, the intersection of these identities illuminates that gains have not been achieved for everyone," the report reads. Among men of color, 23 of the 100 top films featured a person of color in the leading spot. In the last decade, however, the number of leads of color have increased. In 2007, just 13 percent of movies featured a person of color in a leading role, while they were 32 percent in 2021. The report by Annenberg is a piece of its longer investigation into inequality in popular films, which will be released later this year. — Rachel Hatzipanagos |
