The Citing Slavery Project database lists 300 legal cases that involved enslaved people and the modern court cases that cite it as precedent, said Justin Simard, a law professor and legal historian at Michigan State University, the project's founder. Washington Post colleague Justin Wm. Moyer reports on how the database works and some changes that have already been made to a widely used legal citation system.
